Life Balancing Bergamot

For years I have picked perfume with Bergamot essential oil. My scent of choice for a long time was Truth by Calvin Klein.

Not one of the biggest hits with the masses, which is getting harder and harder to get hold of. I have searched many a perfume emporium - on and offline - but the wonderous scent has clearly taken a nose dive into the perfume archives.

Why Bergamot?

Well my husband bought a vial of pure essential oil some 15 years ago, when a lady recommended it for its calming effects, and I have been hooked ever since. The warm yet fresh lemony scent is simply divine! As a teenager I used to be rather partial to a cup of Earl Grey with MILK!...............I pause briefly..............awaiting ripples of disgust, as tea connoisseurs across the globe balk in horror at my choice of accompaniment, other than a slice of lemon.

So other than it's pure perfumery deliciousness, which is used in 1/3rd of all cologne, what else is Bergamot used for?

The spiritual and emotional aspects of the essential oil include inducing renewed optimism, a less stressful outlook on life and easing an agitated, confused or even angry mind. It is an oil of contradiction. It helps lift and boost energy levels and calms and relaxes all at the same time. Some even believe it helps open the mind to the spirit realms, and thus making communication with higher spirit beings easier. It also relates to the Heart Chakra.

I would say it is not the best for anyone who is battling to stick to a diet, as it can stimulate appetite. But if you suffer from indigestion or stomach pains Bergamot can certainly help. If you have skin conditions such as dermatitis, greasy skin, eczema, psoriasis, acne or frequent cold sores then Bergamot is definitely your friend. But it is always good to check with your GP when trying new treatments, just in case.

As with most essential oils, Bergamot should never be used neat on the skin as it can cause a reaction, especially when the skin is sensitive or exposed to sunlight. But blended and diluted in a carrier oil or unscented lotion - at a ratio of 8-10 drops to 10ml of carrier product, to start - it is generally as safe as houses.

Bergamot is part of the orange family, so you may like to try mixing a few drops each of Bergamot and Mandarin oil in a bath - works wonders with the lights out, a few scented candles dotted around the bathroom and a secure lock on the bathroom door.

Have I found a new Bergamot fragrance?

I have indeed!

Bergamot is one of my favourite oils too and I even used it as a case study when I was training as an aromatherapist back in 1998. However I just need to add that 10 drops in 10ml is too high and the maximum should be 6 drops per 10ml. If using 10 drops is ok for you then that's fine :) but generally 4-6 drops is the recommended dilution.

I LOVE bergamot. It's one of my absolute favourite scents! (and on a side note - I work in a cafe in the UK and nearly everyone here has milk with their earl grey. I personally don't understand it, but it's definitely not a taboo thing :D) Thanks for the information :)
